This Old Fashioned is made with Anejo Tequila and flavored with orange and aged bitters. It’s the perfect classic cocktail for anyone who loves tequila. Plus, it’s delicious, refreshing, and easy to make.
This is a 4 ingredient cocktail, and it’s full of flavor. We recommend using Anejo Tequila for a bold, rounded flavor, and then sweeten it with simple syrup and 2 bitters. Serve with a whisky rock and garnish with an orange wheel. We served our recipe with a slice of blood orange, but a regular orange peel works too. Like a traditional old fashioned, you stir everything together and let the mixture sit for a minute or two before taking a sip. This allows the tequila to “breathe.”
🍊 Ingredients
This tequila old fashioned is made with 4 ingredients: tequila, 2 bitters, and homemade simple syrup.
Here are some of our recommendations/tips with the ingredients for the recipe:
We recommend Anejo Tequila for an oaky and richer flavor. Our go-to is Casamigos Anejo. Reposado Tequila is a good option for a softer and mellow flavor.
Use simple syrup or agave nectar to add sweetness. We use the same homemade simple syrup in this recipe as in our classic margarita.
Add an orange peel or an orange wheel to garnish. We used blood oranges, but you can use Naval oranges. For more creativity, you could use dried orange slices.
See the recipe card for full ingredient information and quantities.

📋 Recipe FAQs
Is Anejo or Reposado better for a tequila old fashioned?
The big difference with using one or the other would be the flavor, which depends on your taste. Anejo Tequila is oakier and richer in flavor, while Reposado Tequila has a softer and mellow flavor.
What bitters do you use for an Old Fashioned?
A classic Old Fashioned uses Angostura aromatic bitters, but several different bitters are on the market. We like The Bitter Housewife Bitters, but we recommend starting with Angostura first when starting off with making an Old Fashioned.
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
Stir, not shake. After adding all ingredients to the glass with the large ice cube, the key is to stir the mixture. A great bar spoon works perfectly for this.
Let the tequila breathe for 1 minute. As the ice melts slightly after letting the tequila sit and rest, the flavors will “wake up.”
Use large ice cubes for cocktails. They add character to the drink and will keep the cocktail colder. We love this clear ice cube maker for our cocktails.
